JOSEPH SCHMITZ, MD

Dr. Schmitz is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist. He completed his glaucoma fellowship at UCLA’s Stein Eye Institute, after a residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where he was valedictorian and inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha.

Across a 24-year Naval career he performed and taught cataract surgery, glaucoma procedures, LASIK, PRK, SMILE, and ICL, and later served as faculty and Department Chairman at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He has published peer-reviewed work, and surgical videos of his have been featured by leading ophthalmology organizations.

At SHARPEVISION he specializes in cataract removal, refractive lens exchange, glaucoma surgery, and refractive surgery. He treats patients in Seattle–Bellevue and Renton.

Passionate about global health, he has led surgical eye missions in several countries and now serves as medical director for annual missions to Fiji. Outside of medicine, he enjoys time with his wife, Kati, and their five children, especially supporting their athletic pursuits.
