An overachiever, he graduated the top of his class in Medical school and has continued his excellence in his practice of Ophthalmology. We are proud to bring his expertise to our patients!

Dr. Shields attended Wake Forest University and the Medical College of Georgia where he achieved many honors including; AOA National Medical Honor Society, Merck Medical Student Award for graduating first in medical school class, School of Medicine Scholarship for academic excellence, Dr. Puryear Memorial Scholarship for academic excellence, Hughes Grant for study in the Galapagos Islands and South America, and Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society.
He completed his internships at the University of Washington in Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Shields chose to specialize in Cataract surgery, advanced IOL, Refractive surgery, micro-invasive Glaucoma surgery, and comprehensive ophthalmology. He maintains professional memberships in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, ARVO, American Academy of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, American Medical Association, and the Washington Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
He believes in using his skills for the good of his community and is a member of Pierce County Project Access, providing free cataract surgery for deserving residents of Pierce County. He was also the past President of Pierce County Ophthalmology Society.
In his free time, he enjoys all sports, reading, hiking, skiing, camping, and traveling
